Rabbi Heschel says that religion begins with a sense of the ineffable, but that it discredits our wisdom and shatters our concepts. Most major spiritual practices begin with the realization that we don’t know everything, giving us humility, and putting ourselves in perspective with the rest of the universe. This causes an endless tension that Heschel says is what religion is all about. Religions ask something of their followers; it is not enough to simply claim belief, you must be willing to stand for something. The most important things to stand for are Integrity, Compassion, and Inner Freedom. These three things help one to become part of an eternal spiritual movement.
