Rabbi Heschel talks about a mutual echo between ourselves and the divine: God needs us to be the actors and agents of righteousness and integrity, and we’re in need of breaking free from the motivations of personal satisfaction. After all, personal satisfaction did not drive Moses to demand freedom for his people. He was an agent of God, charged with a difficult task in the name of justice. If religious life is driven by personal satisfaction, then one will only end up serving themselves, and ultimately, Heschel says, injustice will prevail.
