Rabbi Heschel stresses that our passions are meant to be felt. “Rather than worship fire and be consumed by it, we should let a light come out of the flames.” Passions are opportunities of a spiritual nature, just as our common, daily experiences are holy. Ennobling these common experiences gives us freedom, which in turn requires a certain discipline. The way we live is more important than the goal of living (or gaining entry to living forever in the kingdom of heaven, as many Christian religions would have us believe is the goal). Our greatest problem is not how to continue, but how to exalt our existence. Eternity is not a perpetual future, but a perpetual presence.
