After the events that occurred the week before this sermon was given – the police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philandro Castile, and the killing of 5 police officers in Dallas by a lone gunman at the end of an otherwise peaceful protest of police brutality – the two Stevie Wonder songs that we focused on seemed particularly fitting: Heaven Help Us All, and Love’s in Need of Love Today. “Heaven help the black man if he struggles one more day/ Heaven help the white man if he turns his back away,” Stevie sings.”Heaven help the roses as the bombs begin to fall/ Heaven help us all,” Decades after these words were written, they still speak to our current times. “Did you ever think that Love would be in need of love today?” Love is always there, we just need to open our hearts to it. Love needs US to express it.
